The format of the CASA meeting is as crucial as its content. We want to
ask all of you to engage in a construction of interactive spaces that
contribute to constructing emancipatory change that is inclusive.
Interactivity, here, means acknowledging that knowledge construction and
knowledge transmission are not one-directional but rather collective
processes. Thus participants of all kinds (presenters, discussants,
facilitators, technical assistants, and organizers) should actively
engage in collaborative processes rather than in a mere conveying of
knowledge. We are open to alternative formats - from workshops to
performances - that would open spaces for participation and collective
production.
Inclusiveness, here, means open to variety. We want a large diversity of
contributions to the CASA meeting by inviting academics, artists, artist
projects and collectives, utopians, utopian writers, non- institutional
intellectuals, activists engaged in direct actions, and other interested

Serie biografieën. Afl.: Ron Gonggrijp: Iedereen op internet. Rop
Gonggrijp, internetgoeroe en hacker van het eerste uur, koesterde bij
de oprichting van XS4ALL een groot ideaal: het internet toegankelijk
maken voor iedereen. Tegenwoordig maakt hij zich grote zorgen over de
manier waarop de voortschrijdende techniek wordt gebruikt en de
gevolgen voor onze privacy. Is hij de Frankenstein die zijn eigen
monster heeft geschapen? In zijn flat in de Bijlmer kraakte Gonggrijp,
samen met drie andere fanaten, internetaccounts. In hun ogen zou
internet de media en de manier waarop mensen zich gingen informeren
ingrijpend veranderen. Ze waren ervan overtuigd dat mensen het recht
hadden zich hierover te kunnen informeren. Toen in maart 1993 dit
zogenaamde hacken van accounts strafbaar werd, richtten zij in mei
1993 XS4ALL op. 'Eigenlijk een initiatief om niet in de gevangenis te
belanden.' Het bedrijf timmerde behoorlijk aan de weg en in 1997
besloot Gonggrijp er weg te gaan. Het werd hem te groot en de
mentaliteit veranderde. 'Ik geloof niet dat ik talenten of ambities
heb die heel goed aansluiten bij een bedrijf waar zoveel mensen
werken.' Eind 1998 verdiende hij miljoenen met de verkoop van XS4ALL
aan KPN. Tegenwoordig heeft hij een bedrijf dat mobiele telefoons
maakt die niet zijn af te luisteren. Daarnaast ontwikkelt hij
netwerken in een werkplaats in een kraakpand Amsterdam-Oost om daken
van kraakpanden met elkaar te verbinden 'voor de leut'. Maar ze zijn
ook en vooral nuttig voor mensen in gebieden die te ver van
bandbreedte internet vandaan liggen. Rop neemt ons mee naar de locatie
in Amsterdam waar hij in de jaren negentig mateloos spannende
ontdekkingen deed. We zien ook hoe hij zijn oude hobby sloten kraken
weer oppikt. Zag Gonggrijp tien jaar geleden internet nog vol
overtuiging als een zegen, nu is hij daar niet meer zo zeker van. De
technologische ontwikkelingen op het gebied van controle en het
samenstellen van enorme databanken geven overheden steeds meer macht.
